In the highest part of the city center, on a hill-hill was located the Orthodox Cathedral, visible from anywhere in Tuapse. Hence the name of the hill at the time - Church. The original name of this hill - fortress, was built Velyaminovskaya fort. In Soviet times, the hill was named Pioneer.
During World War II the city of Tuapse subjected to fierce air raids and bombing from the air. On the territory of the destroyed cathedral located anti-aircraft battery, defending the city from the air raids. Aviation Nazis made numerous attempts to destroy the anti-aircraft batteries, so the hill was pitted with craters from explosions of bombs.
In 1965, on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Army in the Great Patriotic War, it was decided to rename slides in Gorky Pioneer Heroes and erection of the monument to the Unknown Soldier here. By May 9, 1965 there were the remains of unknown soldiers who lit the eternal flame, put up a guard of honor. The authors of the project are AP Kramnik and DK Lisiecki. Burials were made later, however, to arrange well the territory of the memorial. Today the Hill of Heroes is a wide staircase, its steps overlooks the commercial port of Tuapse. On the approach to stairs in a semicircle are marble plaques mentioning the names and deeds of dead soldiers during the liberation of Tuapse listed military units of the armed forces who fought in the Tuapse direction during the Great Patriotic War.
Hill Memorial Complex of Heroes is a place of worship for soldiers who died in battles for Tuapse. Every year, May 9, many locals come here to honor the memory of fallen soldiers.
