Museum of Modern Art is a 10-minute drive away from the administrative center of Trujillo. The museum was founded in 2006 thanks to a well-known Peruvian artist Gerardo Chavez.
The museum is located in a modern building surrounded by a large garden with lush greenery and a small pond with a smooth cool the water surface. Visitors to the museum welcomes an exhibition of contemporary outdoor sculptures. Decorating the walls of the museum, imitating the masonry of limestone, it is a reminder of the past pre-Hispanic Peru.
The museum building was designed so that it could inspect the exhibits in natural light. The modern, spacious rooms of the museum you can see works by Roberto Matta, Alberto Giacometti, Rufino Tamayo, Paul Klee, and Fernando de Zuzlo, Tola, Angela Chavez, Revilla and other contemporary painters and sculptors.
The Museum of Modern Art has a hall that is completely dedicated to the work of Gerardo Chavez. This is more than ten large-format paintings, among them "La procesión de la papa", where the author used plant pigments and clay. In addition, the museum's collection are stored original works of the German artist Paul Klee and the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.
June 11, 2011 began a new stage in the history of this young museum. On that day, an agreement was signed, according to which the University Antenor Orrego Privada (UPAO) is engaged in the direction of the museum, and Gerardo Chavez is the director and curator of the museum.
The museum has the appropriate infrastructure for major international art exhibitions and biennials.
