Mountain village of Omodos is located in the district of Limassol, just 80 kilometers from Nicosia, capital of Cyprus. The village is situated in the high mountains of the Troodos and has been famous for its vineyards and orchards.
Unfortunately, the history of Omodos known not so much. Scientists believe that earlier, in the Byzantine era, this area has a village Kupetra. However, it was destroyed during the conflict, and the self-proclaimed ruler of the Byzantine emperor Isaac Comnenus of Cyprus and the English King Richard the Lionheart. After some time after the disappearance of Kupetry on this earth there Omodos village, which was designated on maps as Nomotsios and Homodos.
This village is famous primarily for its wine, whose production is the main occupation of the local residents. Every year in August, held in Omodos wine festival where you can not only taste the best local winemakers made the drink, but also try the traditional national dishes, participate in competitions and entertainment.
In addition, one of the main attractions of the village is a beautiful stone church of the Holy Cross, built, according to some sources, as early as the year 337, when it was part of a large monastery. It is considered one of the most sacred places of Cyprus, as it kept a fragment of rope which Jesus Christ was tied to a cross and the relics of many saints.
Also in the village there are several museums, including the traditional wine museum, the Museum of Byzantine icons and folk art museum.
