Monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis

The ancient monastery of Ayios Ioannis Lampadistis located in the small village of Kalopanagiotis, located deep in the Troodos Mountains. Its appearance is due to the tragic story of 22-year-old local boy named John. The young man longed to leave the monastery and devote his life to the service of God, but he tried to force to marry. But he stubbornly refused to marriage, and eventually offended bride tried to poison him, he slipped the poison in the food. Fortunately, John survived, but lost his sight completely. Blinded, but do not lose faith boy still managed to fulfill his dream and become a monk. He is credited with a lot of created during the life of miracles - he cast out demons from people and return water to the dry springs and rivers. After his death he was canonized.

In the chapel of the monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis still kept his relics, which come to worship pilgrims from around the world. Because people believe that visiting this place helps to strengthen faith. In addition, there is stored and the skull safely tucked away in a silver case.

It is believed that in honor of John and was built the monastery, but in fact Agios Ioannis Lampadistis is a rebuilt temple of the Holy Heracleides.

Currently, the monastery is not inhabited by monks. Only once a year, on the day of the death of Saint (October 4), it held a funeral service.

Some time ago it was turned into a kind of church museum. There you can see a well-preserved church utensils of the time, art and a lot of interesting things, created in the period from XII to XIX century. As well as the main exhibit of the museum is the very walls of the monastery, decorated with beautiful frescoes of the XII century.
