Very small church Asinou is located in the eastern part of the Troodos Mountains not far from the village Nikitari. The name of this temple was due to the village of the same name, which was once almost the place was founded by Greek settlers in the XI century BC. e., although the official name of the church is Panagia Forviotissa.
The temple was built back in 1056 Nikifor - husband of the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus. Within a few decades the church became a cathedral church Forviyskogo large monastery, which with time, however, fell into disrepair.
Asinou is a stone structure with a slate roof without a dome made in the Byzantine style.
First of all, the church is famous for its colorful frescoes XII-XVI centuries, which is perfectly preserved to this day. It is assumed that they were all made by Slavic masters. This unique painting of Asinou church was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the middle of the XX century jointly by the Cypriot authorities and Harvard University was a large-scale reconstruction of the wall paintings of the church.
Asinou Church is very popular with pilgrims, tourists and ordinary lovers of antiquity. Even despite its tiny size, it is one of the most famous monuments of Byzantine art in the world.
