On the central square of the city of Togliatti since October 26, 1958 is a monument to "freedom fighters." The author of the tetrahedral stele depicting the outstanding personalities of Stavropol was the chief architect of the city - Mikhail Sorokin.
In 1957, a new urban area of landscaping, the young workers of the plant "Strommashina" decided to erect a monument to its own funds, collected by putting scrap metal, waste paper, etc. The competition winning design M.Sorokina monument with bas-reliefs of heroes of the Great Patriotic War infantryman V.I.Zhilina, V.P.Nosova pilot, sailor E.A.Nikonova and first chairman of the Stavropol City Council - V.V.Banykina (killed in 1918 year). Since November 1958 the area around the monument began to be called Freedom Square, there were demonstrations and holiday celebrations the city, and the nearby boulevard became the Youth.
In April 1975, in the preparation of the celebration of thirty years anniversary of the victory in World War II, the obelisk of Fame modified and reconstructed by removing the decorative stone balls and chains around the edges, as well as replacing the bas-reliefs of heroes bronze medallion with the profile, stoned, ultimately, granite monument. November 3, 1978 a solemn column on an armored personnel carrier from Samara Glory obelisk was brought and lit the eternal flame at the foot of the monument to "freedom fighters."
