At the beginning of the XIX century in the building of the museum was located Tartu County school where children learn mostly artisans. In 1994, the city authorities decided to place here Tartu Toy Museum. In 2002-2003, the room was completely renovated and, importantly, re-established its original appearance, typical of the XIX century.
Tartu Toy Museum opened in May 1994. In 2004 the museum was located in the old town of Tartu, on the street Lutsu-8. Museum complex consists of four buildings XVIII-XIX centuries, of which Lutsu-2 and Lutsu-8 (built in the early 1770s) is one of the oldest surviving wooden buildings in Tartu.
