Translated from the Estonian Toomemägi means "Dome Mountain." However, this hill is not a hill in a literal sense. This scythe, which was formed from the post-glacial deposits of sand and gravel. The height of the hill above the sea level is 66 meters.
Many centuries ago Toomemägi Hill was the center of an ancient settlement. Later here was located castle is the seat of the bishop of Tartu. After the Great Northern War, the ramparts of the castle lost its defensive significance. Part of the ruins buried, something of the remaining material went to build houses. So, gradually, over the long history of landscape formed Toomemägi: initially - because of the nature, and then, over the centuries - the people. At that time the hill was used by locals as a pasture.
Toomemägi Hill, who in the 19th century came to be called on the German style - Domberg, the university was a gift from Emperor Paul I. The first rector of the University of Parrot, director of the scientific library of K. Morgenstern and university architect J. Krause decided to split the park on a hill, open to all interested persons and, in addition, is located on its territory, some university buildings.
On the idea suggested a park in the English style, with landings close to the natural landscape. From building the first university built the rotunda, then the main building of the university and observatory. The preserved part of the ruins that remained from the Duomo, housed the university library. Under the direction of architect I.Krauze in 1850 there were planted the first trees. Most likely, from that time are counting their years of ancient trees in the park - hardwood and pine, which are more than 200 years.
In the park there are many monuments and buildings of architectural and historical value: the University of Tartu History Museum, housed in the former Dome; Angels and the Devil's bridge, the old Anatomikum observatory. At the Angelus the bridge, which is a gate of the Domberg, there is an inscription, which in Latin means "Rest recuperate."
The park is a sacrificial stone, which is supposed to be preserved from ancient times, when Toomemägi is a sacred oak grove. It Estonians, apparently organized various religious ceremonies. Sacrificial stone is located on the former site of the grotto pond that was here before the beginning of the last century. This is reminiscent of Bridge of Sighs, which is on a hill with a kiss. Grotto and slide are made of the ruins of the corner tower of the city wall. Gorka kiss - one of the favorite places for walks young people. Regarding this point there was a custom that came to our days more of the pre-war history. According to this custom, proms students complete the walk up the hill with a kiss.
To park is Kassitoome - a former sand quarry, which is now landscaped. Kassitoome Park with an area of 15, 6 hectares, being thus the largest fleet of Tartu.
