Uksunyoki River - is one of the most complex and interesting rivers in Karelia. The basin is located in Lake Ladoga. It flows through the territory of Pitkäranta and Suojärvi areas. The origin of the river takes about 50 km north of rayonkoski, and empties into Lake Ladoga near the village Uuksu. The total length of the river is 150 km, the width - 10-50 m. The main tributaries of the river are Kaartayoki, Pensanyoki, Mustajoki, Urmanyoki, Uomasoya. Uksunyoki River flows through sparsely populated areas, and on its way meets only two of the village: Uuksu and Raikonkoski.

The distinguishing feature of the river is that it almost does not occur on its long road of lakes; it is not a chain of lakes, connected by canals. End of the river accompanied by four powerful Padun, each more difficult last. For skiing or workout this kind of rapids, waterfalls are not suitable due to excessive power and danger. As for the river as a target for active recreation, the Uuksu particularly diverse. The river going through the swamps and lakes, and its level is largely dependent on the climatic conditions of the coming season.

River Uksunyoki has a third category of complexity. Among the tourists special interest are the last 15 km of the river, because it is at this point are five powerful rapids of the third or higher grade. The upper section of the river is not so interesting, but still found throughout its many Shiver and simple thresholds. It is best to take the river during the "high water" and floods from May to June, a month. Means alloy suit absolutely any.

The first threshold is called the "Pink Elephant" or "paw" is considered the main attraction of the river Uuksu. At this point the river turns right and forked into two powerful streams, one of which tourists have to choose your route. Then the tour will pass the threshold of "Mill". The ruins of a water mill located on the right bank. Drops of water up here about 3 m. Just behind the "mill" is the threshold of "Canyon", which is located at the place where the river narrows sharply and significantly. This place is so named because the right bank of the river is particularly high and rocky, and has numerous boulders that are scattered in a chaotic manner across the riverbed.

After the "Canyon" is passed, it will need to overcome the threshold of another "lower mills" or as it is called "edifice". Further the river is divided into two parts, the left inflow falls two-stage cascade whose height reaches 4-5 meters. But because of the width of the right channel is much wider in the left channel very little water. Most often, this waterfall, tourists are not due to the fact that this place is convenient to complete its extreme waterway. The end of the route takes place in the town of Ile-Uuksu where a dam extending across the river from the train station walk 800 meters.

River Uksunyoki obliged the human factor in terms of the abundance of rapids .  Up to 1917 in the doorway and stood Padun small hydropower plants that provide electricity to all the surrounding towns and villages .  For 50-60-ies, when the Soviet party still decided to increase the small settlements, the nearby villages were completely destroyed, and the inhabitants settled .  GES also blasted .  Thus, the lived-edge very quickly moved to the complete desolation, and on the banks of the River Uuksu even now there is no sign of any settlements, excluding the village Uuksu in the area and which ends with the highest number of rafting routes .  In addition, the surrounding area of the river took place once the border with Finland .  Once the war was over, some of the Finnish land, including the remains of defensive Mannerheim Line, was taken over by the Soviet Union .  In those places are still fortified ramparts, barbed wire, and the ruins of bunkers .

Most often, the water hike on the river Uksunyoki leaves not much time - 3-4 days, for this reason, river rafting most convenient to arrange during a short vacation or a trip to combine with any other river Northern Ladoga.
