The Great Mosque was built in 921 AD. According to legend, through its monumental entrance portal could be held only himself Mahdi and his entourage. It has survived only fragments of buildings. In 1965, the mosque was restored exactly according to the plans of the tenth century Fatimid mosque, but it is currently closed to the public.
