Church of the Assumption (aka Metropolitan Church) was built in the town of Samokov at the expense of wealthy citizens in the late Middle Ages, in 1712. It was built in secret from the Turkish authorities and is a small single-nave church more like a normal house. In order not to arouse suspicion, the pipe was constructed, which was clearly visible from the street.

In 1793, Metropolitan was able to reach an agreement with the Turks, and to obtain permission for the construction of the temple without a steeple. It began a significant upgrade, which resulted from the first church was preserved only part of the wall ASPs. The new building was, in accordance with the requirements of half-dug into the ground and surrounded by high walls.

Work on the decoration of the church was entrusted skilled craftsmen. Walnut for the iconostasis, ambo, throne, etc.. Were delivered from the distant Mount Athos, and from there came a talented carver - Andon monk. He decorated the woodwork images of animals and birds, plants and other decorations. Icons were written in the Samokov icon painter, the founder of the art school Hristo Dimitrov. He painted the vaults of the church.

In 1805 the building was expanded in the nave of the three-nave. In the work it took about a quarter of a century. As a result, in the church there are three altars central - Assumption of the Virgin, the right (south) - St. John of Rila, a left (north) - Harlampy martyr. The fourth seat was arranged in the chapel at the church.

In the same years it was significantly expanded iconostasis, who later became one of the most beautiful in the whole of Bulgaria. Greek master Athanasius Teladur decorated elaborately carved the two wings of the new iconostasis. Delicate roses, sunflowers and sun complement existing composition. The painter Dimitar Zograf wrote icons on the royal doors.

In 1892, after the Liberation, next to the church was built 25-meter bell tower.

Currently, the temple is a stone beskupolnuyu basilica with three naves (separated by two rows of columns) under a gable roof and a semicircular apse. About two meters she dug into the ground. At the entrance to the building is the porch of the porch, leaning on a column. Gender room is lined with marble, the ceiling is decorated with carved and painted.
