Resurrection Cathedral - the oldest stone structure, as well as the main Orthodox church in the city of Sumy, located on the Resurrection. The Cathedral is a wonderful example of Ukrainian Baroque.

Resurrection Church was built in the late 17th - early 18th st. the means of Sumy colonels Gerasim and Andrew Kondratyevs. The church served as the burial place of all kinds Kondratyevs. For some time she also served as usual "Kamyanitsa" defensive function until the end of the 18th century.

According to legend, during the construction of the temple in its wall he has been bricked sister G. Kondratyev - Maria, which was atamansha robber gang, robbing residents. After the robbers caught, his brother was made heavy, but fair solution - an evil sister wall up in the walls of the church. Indeed, in a survey of the temple were discovered remains of a woman and found passages that led to the river Psel.

In Soviet times, the Resurrection Church premises used as warehouses. Over time, the church for a long time housed the art department of the Sumy art museum. Unfortunately, the original form of the cathedral and not preserved. In 1970-ies. in the cathedral were made considerable restoration work, due to which the church acquired a modern look.

Holy Resurrection Cathedral is a very valuable churches, since it harmoniously combines the features of both stone and wood of Ukrainian architecture. The main feature of the shrine is the fact that it has two tiers.

In 1991, after Ukraine gained independence, Resurrection Church was the only church, transferred to the religious community of the UOC-KP, as all the other temples - a new building. Today the Church of the Resurrection of Sumy city is the cathedral of the Diocese of Sumy Kyiv Patriarchate.
