Transfiguration Cathedral in the city of Bendery - the current Orthodox church, an architectural monument of the XIX century, one of the main attractions of the city.
The history of the cathedral dates back to 1814, when the Assumption and St. Nicholas Church on the territory of the fortress esplanade, were destroyed. Then it was decided to build a new cathedral in the name of the Transfiguration in the former Turkish barracks. A year later, namely - August 22, 1815 the first stone of the temple. The event was timed to the anniversary of the liberation of Bessarabia from the Ottoman domination. The author of the project was Archimandrite Ioaniky who proposed to divide the temple complex of three chapels, two of which are named in honor of St. Nicholas and the Assumption Church, respectively, and the third - the center - was named the Transfiguration.
Full construction of the temple was completed in 1840. Transfiguration Cathedral was built in the best traditions of Russian classicism, with its decoration was attended by members of the Moldovan decorative arts. One of the most interesting and exciting parts of the cathedral, you can call it the main dome. Since the Transfiguration Cathedral was conceived as a symbol of victory over the Turkish yoke, it was decided to make it the main dome in the shape of ancient warrior's helmet.
From 1918 to 1944, and the cathedral belonged to the Romanian church, its interior during this time greatly decayed. Only in 1934 it was carried out reconstruction work, updated interior, murals on the walls.
During the Second World War, the cathedral was badly damaged. After one of the shelling in the room there was a fire, which destroyed the famous iconostasis seven wooden columns and archives, which contained significant data about the life of the inhabitants of Bender in the prewar period. In 1948, the temple was reconstructed, it was given the official title of the monument of architecture of XIX century.
1992 was another tragic milestone in the history of the cathedral. During the fighting, were damaged roof and dome of the Cathedral of the Transfiguration.
