Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm is one of two major natural history museums in Sweden (the other is located in Gothenburg). The museum was founded in 1819 the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in order to make available to the public collections gathered by the Academy since its inception in 1739. The museum was separated from the Academy in 1965.
One of the first curator of the collection of the Academy of Sciences was Anders Sparrman, a student of Carl Linnaeus and one member of the expedition of Captain James Cook.
