At the heart of the city of Chania is the Municipal Market. In the late 19th century, this area was the edge of town where the citizens and residents of nearby neighborhoods brought their goods for sale. We can say that it was a typical farmer's market.

In 1908, the municipality had decided to improve the conditions for trade. In 1911, construction began on the covered Municipal Market modeled on the covered market in Marseilles (France). It is located on the site of the Venetian bastion platform, much of the wall which was demolished in order to improve the city's infrastructure. The new market has taken an area of 4000 square meters. m. It was built in the shape of a cross and has four main entrances. Construction market ended in 1913. Official opening of the market held on December 4, 1913 Greek Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos. On the eastern and western markets of meat was sold, the western part of the market was reserved for fish production, on the northern and southern ends of the market selling vegetables and fruits.

In May 1941, during the Second World War the southeastern part of the market has been completely destroyed. During the German occupation soldiers occupied the central arcade, which have been adapted for the needs of the army. After the war were restored.

In today's market, there are 76 stores, including vegetables, meat, cheese, fruit and, of course, fish shops. In a cozy restaurant, located on the territory of the market, you can enjoy excellent Mediterranean cuisine, which is traditionally rife with different seafood delicacies. In a small café break and have a cup of coffee, contemplating the market turmoil, and then in the souvenir shops to buy charming souvenirs.
