Round House - the oldest surviving building in Western Australia. Located at Cape Arthur Head in Fremantle. A recent study of the surroundings of the Round House on the subject of historical value allowed himself Cape Arthur Head to list of cultural heritage of Western Australia.

The round house was built in 1830 by local engineer Henry Willie roared, and it was the first major building in the colony of Swan River. The building was constructed as a prison - with 8 cameras and a room for the warden, all the rooms opened to the courtyard. As the sample was selected Panopticon - the type of panopticon, invented by the philosopher Jeremy Bentham.

Until 1886 Round House was used for its intended purpose for prisoners from among the colonists and the local Aboriginal people. After the function has become a prison to perform penal colony for criminals (now known as the Fremantle Prison) in the Round House is located a little cooler. Only in 1900, the building was transformed into the living room - here settled the police chief and his wife and ten children.

In the late 19th century under the Round house it was built an underground tunnel that could quickly get out of the city to the beach and back. We do this whalers when a vantage point at Cape Arthur Head noticed swims sea giant, whalers tunnel can quickly be on shore at their boat and go in pursuit of prey.

In 1929, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the city the Royal Historical Society of Western Australia placed on the wall of the Round House commemorative plaque in recognition of the historical value of this place.

In 1982, the Round House was acquired by the City Council of Fremantle and shortly thereafter was opened for visits. Today, the Round House love to come to the wedding procession photos on the background of colonial architecture.
