Ruins and one of the largest and most famous of the early Christian basilicas of Cyprus - Chrysopolitissa - is located near the city harbor of Paphos.

It was erected even the IV century. However, in the VII century during the next Arab raids basilica was completely destroyed. From that buildings have survived only a great beauty mosaic floors with floral and geometric motifs, as well as several columns, which remained even inscriptions made by the invaders. Later, according to one source - in the XII century, on the other - in the XV, it was built on the ruins of a Byzantine church, which was called the Church of Saint Kyriaki. She is still in excellent condition, and it is now held Catholic and Anglican services.

Also, this place is famous for the fact that according to legend, one of the columns, which is on the north-eastern side of the temple, as a punishment for the preaching of the Apostle Paul Romans tied to beat whips. Unfortunately, from this column is only one marble pedestal. In addition, it is believed that this is the first time the temple the Apostle converted to Christianity a Roman official who was then the governor of the empire on the island - Sergius Paulus.

Also, the church became famous for the fact that was the first place visited by Pope Benedict XVI, when in 2010 went on a journey "in the footsteps of the Apostle Paul."

Now in this area are carried out large-scale excavations. There were discovered the remains of the Sanctuary of Aphrodite, as well as another Christian church, which was destroyed by an earthquake.
