Temple of the Mother of God "Old Russian" is in the city of Staraya Russa, a part of the Holy Transfiguration Monastery. In the middle of 1888 in the city of Tikhvin was returned miraculous icon of the Holy Mother of God Starorusskaya. For the location of the icon was built church located on Alexander Street, which now bears the name of the street Volodarsky. The new temple has become one of the most beautiful and richest in the entire city, if measured by the presence of icons and interior decoration. The construction of the temple was carried out on the money that was collected from citizens in order to bring the famous icon in Staraya Russa.

In the summer of 1898 took place on the inception of the church, and by the end of the year all the stone work was completed. Next summer, the church was completely painted and equipped, that was due to the abbot of the monastery Mardari. August 31, 1892 the temple icon of the Mother of God sanctified Starorusskaya, and a few days later and consecrated the altar in the name of Vladimir the Baptist; in the process of sanctification involved Father John of Kronstadt. It was from the time of construction of the cathedral ensemble of Holy Transfiguration Monastery was finally completed.
