In the southwest of the Republic of Karelia is a wonderful and unique lake - Lake Yanisyarvi. People settled on the shores of the lake in the Stone Age. There was always a lot of fish, and the forests that surround the lake are always animals were carried out, which could be hunted. Later, when people began to engage in agriculture and construction, part of the local inhabitants lived off the land surrounding the processing, which is very fertile, and some - by deforestation. With the advent of sawmills are many residents of the glorious lake began to live at the expense of harvesting and timber floating. At the bottom of the lake it was discovered by an unknown ore and marble that rises to the surface and sold. The locals call the lake "Lake breadwinner" because all of their income from it just happened. At the time, no one thought about when, and under what circumstances did this wonderful lake breadwinner.

Close to the lake, scientists have begun studying only in the twenties of the last century. Finnish scientist geologist Eskola thoroughly studied the lake and all the surrounding islands. He found on the islands and in the center of the lake an unusual breed. The researchers suggested that these unusual rocks are the result of a volcanic eruption that occurred about 700 million years ago.

Other researchers believe that the lake Yanisyarvi formed by meteorite and that it is nothing like the broken crater. In favor of this hypothesis say glassy rocks of dark green and dark gray slabs that are here in large numbers. Another circumstance, testifying in favor of this hypothesis is that the lake is located in a basin depth of about 80 meters and a width of about 18 kilometers. The average depth of the lake is 11, 6 meters and the biggest - 57 meters. Such options could turn out as a result of a meteorite-asteroid. Indeed, of many species found here it is made up of minerals that could be formed only by the impact of a huge meteorite the Earth's surface. Anyway, the views of scientists agree on one thing: the age of the lake Yanisyarvi has about seven million years old!

The ancient history of this unusual lake still attracts scientists, researchers and curious tourists. However, in addition to scientific interest, the lake attracts primarily of its extraordinary beauty. It is surrounded by forty-three picturesque islands. The lake is quiet, very clean, clear waters which are home to fish and other aquatic inhabitants. Avid fishermen say that here there are roach, pike, bream, perch, whitefish, ruffe, burbot, salmon - about 14 species. Lake able to please and surprise the most demanding fisherman.

Around there are stony, rocky shores, entirely covered with wood. Untouched nature, ancient forests, fresh air and the calm surface of the water under deep blue sky - this is what opens the eyes of approaching the lake.

The lake has an oval shape, slightly elongated in the direction of north and south. In the western side of the lake adjacent to the two Gulf large enough - and it Kontioleppyalahti Kirkkolahti. The south side also has two bays: Ulmalahti and Oravanniemenlahti. From the lake, on the southern side of the river flows Yanisyoki. through rocky terrain, river rapids turned out very picturesque and at the end of its path the river flows into Lake Ladoga. But the lake itself is replenishing its water reserves of 20 small rivers and streams.
