Sopot Pier

Sopot pier - the longest pier on the Baltic Sea. Its length is 511, 5 meters, of which 458 meters are located in the Gulf of Gdansk.

Pierce is one of the biggest attractions of Sopot. It was first opened in 1827. Pier extends into the sea from the middle of Sopot beach, which is a popular place for recreation and health walks townspeople (the concentration of iodine in the end of the pier is twice as high as on land). It hosts public entertainment events, as well as the pier is used for mooring of boats and water taxis. It is also an excellent point to observe the sailing competitions and cups Sopot Triathlon. Sopot Pier is considered the longest wooden pier in Europe and second only to iron pier Southend, located in the UK.

The first berth length of 150 meters was built in 1827 by George Hafner. By the early twentieth century, it was extended to 350 meters. Pretty soon became pier tourist attraction, with the second half of the nineteenth century, the entrance to the pier was paid. The last major renovation was carried out in 1928 in honor of the centennial of the dock.

In 2005, Pierce was named in honor of John Paul II, who visited the Sopot twice in 1987 and 1999. Currently, Sopot Pier is an architectural monument. Every year there are urban cultural events, concerts and exhibitions are organized.
