Lagoa - is a municipality on the island of São Miguel, with a population of about 15 000 people. Lagoa is located east of Ponta Delgada, the largest city and the largest port of the Azores. In the eastern part of the municipality are the mountains, most of which is covered by forests. The remaining lands of the municipality used for agricultural purposes.
Lagoa territory was inhabited as soon as the island of San Miguel were the first colonists. The Municipality consists of 5 districts: Agua de Pau, Kaboku, Nossa Senhora do Rosario, Ribeira Shang and Santa Cruz. The first settlement of the municipality were concentrated near the bay, which was named Porto das Karneyrosh. The houses were built mainly around the church of Santa Cruz, which was not far from the lake, now it is already dry. In the XV century, it continued development of the island and the colonists went on to colonize the land. The port has become a place of active fishing. By 1515 it was already built about 100 houses.
In 1522 became the administrative center of Lagoa, the number of homes reached 300, and the population was about 1,000. At that time in Lagoa wheat, it produced wine, grown and woad dyeing, which was used as a natural dye blue. The community flourished in the XIX century Lagoa was a successful center for the production of ceramics and the distillation of alcohol, and later was built a factory to produce vegetable oil, soap and animal feed. By the end of the twentieth century, the service sector began to occupy a dominant place in the economy of the municipality.
Territory coast of Ponta da Galera is a protected area because of the large number of shallow caves, endemic plants, the marine environment and endangered species of flora and fauna. Among the architectural structures worth mentioning the building of the parish church of Nossa Senhora shower Anzhosh, Franciscan monastery, chapel of San Pedro, San Tiago. Tourists are attracted by a mild climate, as well as the opportunity to swim in the clear waters near the port, the sea area which has the international Blue Flag - a certificate of environmental frequencies beach.
