On the northwest coast of the island of Rhodes are the ruins of an abandoned ancient city Kameyros. The ancient settlement was founded by Dorians even in ancient times. Later, the territory was inhabited by the Achaeans. Kameyros was one of the most powerful cities of the island, and with Lindos and Ialyssos in the 5th century BC have teamed up to create a powerful state of Rhodes.
The ancient city Kameyros was built on three levels. On top of the hill an ancient acropolis with the temple of Athena Kameyrskoy, dating from the 8th century BC In the 6th century BC Here it was built a special water tank (capacity of 600 cubic meters), which is filled by water system. Later above the reservoir was completed covered colonnade, which consisted of two rows of columns and additional facilities. The main settlement was located on the middle terrace and consists of a grid of parallel streets and neighborhoods. On the lower terrace was discovered Doric temple, probably dedicated to Apollo, the market square (Agora) and much more.
The highest economic boom in the city has reached the 6th century BC Why with the time, the city began to decline, it is not known. In 408 BC, It was founded by Rhodes, who quickly became the largest shopping center of the island. Most of the population Kameyrosa gradually moved to Rhodes. Two strong earthquakes in 226 and 142 years BC virtually all destroyed, and the inhabitants finally left these places.
The first archaeological excavations were carried out by Alfred Biliotti and Auguste Salzmann in the years 1852-1864, then was discovered the ancient Acropolis. In 1928, when Rhodes was still under the yoke of the Italian, Italian Archaeological School resumed work and continued large-scale systematic excavations until the end of the Second World War.
