Church of the Holy Hrizogona - aisled basilica with a semicircular apse in Romanesque style. It is named in honor of St. Hrizogona - martyr, the patron saint of Zadar. Not far from the church are the remains of the medieval Benedictine monastery, which was completely rebuilt in the 19th century.
The church and the abbey was built on the site of the old market square. According to legend, in the same place there was a church and monastery of St. Anthony. In 1175 the church was consecrated the first Archbishop of Zadar. Probably the temple was built the same wizard that created the Cathedral of Zadar. Particularly beautiful eastern wall of the church - there goes graceful colonnade.
Center for the interior decoration is the altar in the baroque style, surrounded by marble statues depicting patron saints of Zadar. The altar itself was built in 1701, and the statue erected in 1717. Sculptures of St. Simeon, St. Anastasia, St. Zoilus and holy work of the Venetian sculptor Hrizogona Alvise Tagliapetra were installed in gratitude of citizens of Zadar for deliverance from the plague in 1632. In the central part of the main apse there are fragments of Roman-Byzantine frescoes.
Bell tower began to build in 1485 and in 1546 it was never completed.
The church is a monument of architecture very popular among both residents and tourists. The city takes care of this unique monument and constantly restoration works, the last of which were held in 2003-2004.
