Tamsweg - Austrian market town located in the province of Salzburg, near the border with Styria. It is the administrative center of the district of the same name and the largest city Tamsweg Lungau region of Salzburg.
From the 8th century the land around the modern Tamsweg were under the power of the Bavarian dukes. The first documentary mention of the locality Taemswich refers to 1156. In 1246 these territories were acquired by Archbishop Eberhard II. In 1433 on a hill south of the village church was built Tamsweg St. Leonhard, who gained fame far beyond the borders of Austria and has become a popular place of pilgrimage, which contributed to the economic growth of the surrounding villages.
At the end of the 15th century the church was extended to a fortress for defensive purposes against repeated Ottoman invasion. In 1490 the castle was occupied by the Hungarian army of King Matthias Corvinus, and became a place of fierce battles against the forces of the Emperor Frederick III.
Since 1571 in Tamsweg was the residence of Baron von Kuenburga.
From 1700, the city started trading with salt and iron, which are more than 200 years were the main sources of income citizens.
Age of the 19th brought the region economic crisis, declining population, poverty and development deficits. In the late 19th century, the city began again economic growth: in 1894 the railway line was opened, in 1897, was commissioned in power, and in 1908 opened a hospital in Tamsweg.
