In the harbor of Kato Paphos, on the western edge of the waterfront, there is one of the most interesting locations in Paphos - Port fortress. Historical sources indicate that this harbor was actively used in the era of Alexander the Great of Macedon.
The first consolidation of the harbor were built by the Byzantines. It was a small castle with only one entrance, narrow windows, a square tower and a small patio. But the building was destroyed by a powerful earthquake in 1222. Later, the fortress was rebuilt in the IV century Lusignan. Then, on the coast were built just two towers, which were to protect the city from the sea. Later, when the power on the island trying to capture the Turkish army, the Venetians, who own territory at the time, completely destroyed the fort, the Ottomans were unable to use them later.
However, in 1592, the Ottomans, who still managed to occupy the city, the site of one of the destroyed towers erected a new castle, which is still in the port of Paphos. However, in addition to its basic function of defense of the city, it was to carry out further strengthen the role of the prison for prisoners of war, as it was stored weapons and ammunition. And when the British army captured the city, even the fortress served as a warehouse of salt.
Now the place is very popular among tourists. At the fortress works exhibition gallery and the roof with its stunning views of the surrounding area. In addition, recently the walls of the fortress Port every year in September, held a cultural festival.
