Olomouc City officials realized that their city needs a zoo in the 1950s, when the city's main park to them. Smetana was founded by a small zoological corner, which contained several species of mammals and birds characteristic of the Czech Republic. However, among the cells with traditional herons and hawks met aviary with parrots and peacocks that have always crowded with kids.
By building a large zoo had to be approached with the utmost seriousness. The initial task was to find a suitable site. She was found outside the city on the Holy Hill, which previously owned the Hradisko monastery, and was a 42, 5 hectares of pine forest.
Year zoo education is considered to 1953. Above the construction of enclosures for animals worked mass of people, mostly ordinary citizens, who worked on a voluntary basis and does not receive a fee. Besides pavilions and various outbuildings, it had much to do: bring water and electricity, to build a convenient route to the entrance to the zoo, take care of the creation of infrastructure. All this was done by 1956.
Now this is one of the favorite places of recreation for residents and visitors of Olomouc. Here you can see representatives of both local and exotic fauna giraffes, kangaroos, lemurs, Ussuri tiger and so on. In addition to showing viewers mammals and birds, the zoo is also involved in breeding rare species. For example, the zoo staff are involved in various breeding programs, including those related to reproduction herons and mountain goats.
In the center stands the zoo lookout tower from which you can see on the territory of the park from a great height. There is also an aquarium, which is considered the pride of the small reef sharks.
