Located almost in the center of Nicosia, Ledra Street is one of the main shopping streets. Its length is slightly more than one kilometer, but it is located in two states - in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus. His name street got the name of the ancient city that was once located on the spot where later was built Nicosia.

Most of Ledra, about 800 meters, is located in the Greek part of the island, about another 150 meters is located on the Turkish territory. The remaining 70 meters are no one owned a buffer zone, which is today occupied by UN peacekeeping troops. The military staged its headquarters in the famous hotel "Ledra". Surprisingly, the initial task was to protect their citizens is the Turkish part of the island from terrorist attacks of Greek Cypriots who have become frequent in the middle of the last century. While Ledra even called "dead miles" from the constant bloody battles.

Ledra is now safe and completely pedestrian - where you can walk, relax on the benches and shop in local stores and kiosks.

Until recently shared street barricade three meters wide. But in 2008, Ledra was open, which was a significant event for the island, as a further step to promote dialogue between the two countries. Now, to cross the border, the citizens of the southern part of the island only need to submit the documents, but the Turkish Cypriots have so far forced to undergo the full procedure until the visa stamped in their passport.
