Archaeological Park "Urbs Salvia" is located in the municipality urbisaglia in the Italian region of Marche. It is the largest archaeological park in the region.
The ancient city of Urbs Salvia was founded as a Roman colony in the 2nd century BC It is here that were born some important figures Ancient Roman Empire - for example, the consul Fufy Dzheminus and General Lucius Flavius Bassus. In the 5th century, the city was ravaged by the Visigoths, and then for several years suffered from earthquakes and looting by warlike tribes. The decline of Urbs Salvia, in his "Divine Comedy" was describing the great Dante.
Today the ruins of the ancient city protected under the Archaeological Park, are of exceptional scientific interest and is a major tourist attraction Marche. A visit to the park usually starts with a visit to the archaeological museum, which stores epigraphs, statues and portraits, found during excavations in urbisaglia since the mid 18th century. Just beyond the medieval city walls at the highest point you can see a huge reservoir for collecting and cleaning water 1, 5-kilometer-long Roman aqueduct. The reservoir consists of two interconnected barrel-vaulted tunnel inner walls are covered with a hydraulic mortar. Each tunnel is 51 meters long, 2, 9 meters wide and capacity of a thousand cubic meters of water.
Below the reservoir has an impressive amphitheater, built in the 23 th AD of the Hellenistic model. It has survived Cave - the audience, divided into three rows of seats, the hall with steps leading down to a small temple, and the lower part of the scene. Behind the scenes, you can see the artificial terrace, which once framed by a colonnade.
At the foot of the hill there was a temple complex - it was conveniently located along the Salaria Gallica, the main communication artery pichenov. The facade of the main temple dedicated to Salusa Augusto, was decorated with six columns. From it remained only a portion of the pedestal. And on the perimeter of the temple was surrounded by a covered gallery with frescoes in the Pompeian style. Next to the main temple was another, smaller size, and behind him was a territory, which is probably used for ritual purposes.
Just outside the city walls Urbs Salvia can see two tombstones and an amphitheater - one of the most well-preserved in the entire region of the Marche. This amphitheater was built in the 81 th AD and it was used for gladiatorial combat.
