Makarska Municipal Museum was founded in 1962 when the museum was founded the national liberation struggle of Biokovo. The museum houses archival materials and historical sites in the region up to the present time. In 1973, the museum has teamed up with the municipal center of Makarska on culture and changed the name to the Museum of the Revolution. At that time, the museum has expanded the area of work, laid the foundation for the formation of museum collections representing all historic periods of the city, at the same time created an archive and museum library.
In 1991, due to the social changes name was changed to the Regional Museum of Makarska. Formed archeological, ethnographic and cultural-historical collection, a collection of contemporary history has been expanded Subcollection. Heirs of Makarska painter Antun Goyaka donated gallery of his works.
When in 1995 the municipal center of Makarska Cultural Affairs was abolished, the museum became an independent institution. After separation of the museum was established gallery Antun Goyaka.
Today museum exhibits are divided into the museum collection and subcollection, the total number of objects more than 2700. Among them are important written sources, photos and drawings related to the cultural heritage of Makarska and Makarska Riviera.
