Photo: Castle of St. George
Fortress St. George has since ancient times been the strengthening of guarding the mouth of the Tagus. In 1147, King Alfonso Henriques altered the fortress into a royal residence. In 1511, King Manuel I built a palace outside the fortress, and here posted an armory and a prison. When the 1755 earthquake fort has been hit hard, and only in 1938 began restoration work, but little remains of the old buildings.
The city walls were restored and now you can walk them around the old quarter of Santa Cruz. The fortress towers arranged various exhibitions telling the history of the castle and the entire city. With lookouts magnificent views over Lisbon.
