Museum of Fine Arts or the Museum of Groningen, was opened to the centennial independence of Belgium. Until that time, it was located in the building of the Academy of Arts, which in the heyday in 1902, held a major exhibition of works by Flemish artists of the XV century. That aroused extraordinary interest not only to the art of the time, but to the museum. Founded in 1903, "Society of Friends of the Museum" with the support of the state and the province expanded the collection of 40 paintings by old and modern artists. Currently, it is the most valuable part, arranged in chronological order in the beautiful halls, upholstered velvet steel color.

During the construction of the new museum building were taken into account all measures to exploit it as a repository of art treasures, as such, falls on top of scattered light, which allows to avoid falling on the painting highlights hindering their inspection.

The museum is full of valuable works of art created by masters of Bruges. Among them are brilliant creation of Hugo van der Goes - painting "Assumption of the Virgin", about the life and work of which little is known. The other rooms display works by Hans Memling, Gerard David Lancelot Blondel, as well as watercolors and engravings remarkable English painter of XX century. Frank Brengvina. All these works, along with other collections, and worthy of serious scrutiny, the Museum of Groningen converted into a real treasury of works of art.
