Town Hall Leipzig - a magnificent structure, which is one of the most famous sights of the city and its decoration. Initially, in its place it was located Plyayssenburg castle that was built in the XIII century. It was demolished in 1890, and already in 1897 the municipality of Leipzig announced a competition to design a new city hall. The main requirement for the architects was the fact that the new building is reminiscent of a castle demolished. In this competition won by Hugo Licht, Director of the Department of construction in the city of Leipzig.
By 1905, the building of the New Town Hall, occupies about 10,000 square meters, has been completely built, and its opening was held in the presence of the King of Saxony Friedrich August III. In architectural terms this building intertwined several styles, you can find items and Gothic and Art Nouveau. The facades of the town hall decorated with various sculptures and bas-reliefs, turrets and bay windows. The central part of the building is a 114-meter-high round tower, reminiscent of an ancient castle, formerly located on the site.
In creating the interior decoration of the New Town Hall participated talented artist of the XX century, Fritz Schumacher and sculptor Carl Zeffner. Of special interest is a carved staircase made of wood and a boardroom, which is preserved without any changes. The lower and upper galleries of the New Town Hall hold exhibitions, and in its basement, where previously to City Hall wine cellar, there is a restaurant called "Leipzig".
This building is now the seat of the City Council and includes 600 rooms. It was in this building hold their meetings, the City of Leipzig.
