Ethnographic Museum Grassi is a large complex, which includes a three attractions Leipzig Musical Instrument Museum, the Museum of Ethnography and the Museum of Applied Arts. The name of that place was given in honor of Franz Dominic Grassi. Maecenas, Leipzig banker and a true connoisseur of art left a will to 2 million marks, which was created this museum.
The museum building was built in the XX century, but because of the shelling and air raids during the Second World War it suffered greatly, was destroyed and severely damaged most of the historical artifacts. Despite the fact that the ethnographic museum was opened up to the public as early as the 50s, many of the existing exhibits were closed for a visit until 2007.
Among the exhibits you can find numerous household items, as well as works of art of various peoples of the world. The Museum of Applied Arts visitors can get acquainted with the products of craftsmen, blacksmiths, woodcarvers and glass blowers, all items are more than 90 thousand. Among the exhibition features an office, in the style of the Italian Renaissance, there is also an exhibition hall and the Roman, which presents masterpieces from the treasury of Leipzig.
By the ethnographic museum and the library is where you can find various historical engravings, photographs and old books.
Museum of Musical Instruments has become famous for its unique collection of tools in Europe. The oldest exhibits date from the XVI century. The museum is divided into several rooms with a particular theme, each of them are the tools that characterize very different time period.
