Auerbachs Keller is one of the most popular and well-known restaurants in the old Leipzig. It is located inside Medler-passage. At the beginning of its existence in 1438 it was the place where the wine trade was carried out. The name chosen by chance, it is due to the Saxon Elector and professor of medicine Strohmer Henry, who was known in the city as Dr. Auerbach. He was born in the small town of Auerbach, located in the Upper Palatinate.

For its impeccable service and dedication to the doctor received permission from the king to the wine trade. From the earliest days of the cellar of Auerbach became very popular among the population of Leipzig, among the regulars of this place was the reformer Martin Luther, poet and thinker Johann Goethe, who was very impressed by the story of Faust Warlock, rode on a large barrel up the stairs.
