Mergozzo - one of the most picturesque villages on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Since the spring, it is filled with tourists and is becoming a very popular vacation spot on the lake. Its old stone houses huddle together, separated by only a narrow span. The central square is decorated with a huge Mergozzo ancient elm tree - according to historical documents, it is at least 400 years old! Today it is completely empty inside the tree is called "a monumental tree of Piedmont."

Mergozzo was inhabited even in ancient times, as evidenced by the exhibits collected in local antique museum - they date back to the Bronze Age. There you can see old tools once used for the extraction and shaping granite quarries of Montorfano and the marble of Candolim.

In the town Groppoli is important megalithic complex with a serpentine groove. Shaped ellipse surrounded by a stone wall and covered with huge granite boulders, this building is known as Ca 'd'la Norm and dates back to the Neolithic era. Careful arrangement of boulders, wide forecourt and petroglyphs on the outer surface suggests that it was a megalithic funerary complex, built a society that has reached a certain level of self-organization.

In the vicinity of Mergozzo laid several trails going through beautiful countryside. For example, the Sentiero Azzurro - Blue Trail - leads to the village of Montorfano. It is very popular both with locals and tourists alike Mergozzo beaches, where you can play beach volleyball, or sit at the bar. For children there are playgrounds. Well worth a try "fugashine" - a delicious cake which is prepared only in Mergozzo. To get to this town is possible by road from Domodossola.
