Lonato del Garda is located halfway between Milan and Venice in the south-western shore of Lake Garda. Until 2007 it was called simply Lonato. With its spectacular scenery, numerous historical and artistic monuments, Roman ruins, medieval castles, baroque churches and modern museums the city has become a popular holiday destination among the residents of northern Italy.

The first settlements found on the territory of modern Lonato belong to the Bronze Age - the remnants of pile dwellings found in the towns and Polad Lavanone. According to some scholars, the name of the city comes from the Celtic word "bosom", which means "little lake". In Roman times a road through Lonato Basilica Emilia that connected Aquileia to Gaul. Artifacts of those times have been found in Monte Mario and in the village of Pozzo.

In 909, the city was completely destroyed during the invasion of the barbarians, and then in its place was built a powerful castle and founded the new, fortified, settlement. Despite this, in the next century Lonato has repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. In 1512 it posted here his residence the French King Louis XII, invaded Italy. And after a couple of years Lonato became part of the Venetian Republic, where he remained until 1796 - the year of the appearance of Napoleon.
