St. Andrew's Church is located on the steep right bank of the Dnieper, on the historical part of the city - Podil. It is visible from afar and is due to its elegance and colorful appearance of one of the most significant architectural works in Kiev. From St. Andrew's Church goes down the picturesque St. Andrew's Descent, where he was born and lived Mikhail Bulgakov.
According to legend, once in place Dnipro was the sea, but when in Kiev St. Andrew came and placed on the hill where now stands St. Andrew's church, cross the sea went down and hid under the mountain. The St. Andrew's Church has no bells because, according to legend, at the first stroke of the bells will wake up and the water will flood all Kiev.
The project of St. Andrew's Church created by famous architect Rastrelli, and laid the first stone of the construction of the Empress Elizabeth of All Russia in 1744. Construction of the temple under the leadership of the Moscow architect IF Michurin was very slow due to the fact that they were not set aside resources that were in the mountain under the church, and for many years the water seeped through the walls of the basement and destroyed it.
In the interior of the temple took part artists: I. Vishnyakov with students Romenskii, Tchaikovsky and A. Antropov, painted the pulpit, dome, a number of icons and images of the iconostasis in the altar.
After the revolution of St. Andrew's Church was closed for a long time until 1968 it did not open as a museum. In May 2008, it was informed of the transfer of St. Andrew's Church from the balance of the National Reserve "Sophia of Kyiv" Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
