Assumption Cathedral is one of the oldest buildings of the city of Kherson. It was founded in 1785 on the initiative of the Greek area of ​​Kherson merchants. Some believe that as soon as construction began of the temple, stopped the plague raging at the time in Kherson. In August 1798 the construction was completed, after which the Church of the Assumption was blessed and consecrated a year later two of its limit: the northern - in the name of Varvara, south - in the name of Nicholas the Wonderworker. Construction of the cathedral would never have ended if it had not 40,000th of an anonymous donation to the Cossacks.

Cathedral of the Assumption was built in the style of early classicism. Cross-domed church has the shape of an oblong cross. Modest exterior redeems charming interior decoration. Great lighting church icon opens the eyes of visitors of the Assumption and gorgeous, elegant iconostasis. In 1828, it becomes an ordinary parish church Cathedral. In 1853 the Assumption Cathedral was granted the status of a cathedral. Holidays and Sunday services were held in the temple of the local bishop FI Radkevich.

In the 50-ies. 19 Art. in the history of the cathedral, there were two important events: the first took place in 1852, when the first church vault procession visited the miraculous icon Kasperovskaya Queen of Heaven, and the second - in 1855, when the cathedral was visited by the Emperor Alexander II.

In 1930 the church was closed, and all its values ​​savagely plundered. From amazing iconostasis remained only one icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon. Just Cathedral is about 50 icons. A little later a church were removed and destroyed the dome, and some time later was defeated and the city's largest bell. In 1931, in a building of the Assumption Cathedral of the gym opened Petrovsky factory. It was only in January 1993, after the temple gave the Orthodox Church, it again resumed service.
