Thunder House is located in Kaunas. It was erected in the XV century. It is an example of late Gothic architecture which still bears the name "flame." This style is characterized by richness, abundance of detail and perfection of lines. The house is built of red brick and looks very powerful and even a few squat building, to which you can not only see, but also to go inside, which in itself is capable to impress every lover of antiquity.
House of Thunder is also called "medieval relic." They were particularly interested in the XIX century, when its wall was discovered (and later lost) bronze statue of the pagan god Perkunas or Perkunas. In the mythology of the so-called Baltic god of thunder. It was announced that the building was a pagan temple of the god. This beautiful version was so strong that the name of the house called the Thunder until today. In addition, the famous building steadily associated with the pagan religion of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and even referred to as "the sanctuary of the god of thunder ', forgetting the fact that the pagans never erect a building in the style of flaming Gothic style and that is important, in the XIV century Lithuania had already been baptized.
Originally the house consisted of two parallel body, which had a total main wall. One of the buildings served as a warehouse. It was destroyed in the XVIII century. By hypothesis the researchers, the existing two-storey Gothic building with a basement was built as an office-warehouse merchants of the Hanseatic League. Its layout is typical of public buildings (kitchen was missing). Preserved in terms of main building has a rectangular shape. Its two floors are divided into three parts by two main walls. Representative areas were located on the second floor.
The house was reconstructed several times, especially in the XVII and XVIII centuries, but the main facade of the Allen stayed in the Gothic style . It is characterized by extraordinary originality and splendor of a composition that consists of two main parts . It - made asymmetrical wall with glazed bay window (a projection in the wall) and symmetrical niches and pediments . They shared a pictorial frieze with additional mesh ornament made of molded brick . The pediment is decorated in the style of the relief space, and consists of five verticals, culminating with decorative turrets (pinnacles) and associated with the plane of the gable . Open bay underlines the average vertical . Plane between the verticals are filled relief arches, interlacing irregular, small niches and small windows . The decoration of the pediment consists of sixteen different types of bricks complex profile . On the steep roof is lined with antique tiles . On the north wall, you can see traces of the once stood here at home the same size and silhouette . They were discovered by archaeologists in . Myakasom, conducts research buildings . After regaining independence, the House of Thunder was returned to the Jesuits, in whose possession the building was after the First World War. Now the house belongs to the Kaunas Jesuit gymnasium. There is an exhibition which tells about the life and work of the great poet and novelist, one of the main symbols of Lithuanian Culture Adam Mickiewicz living several years in Kaunas (Kovno before). There is also arranged for the concert hall and exhibition, organized theater trips.
Due to its unique composition, House of Thunder is one of the most valuable monuments of Gothic architecture in Lithuania.
