Jantar Mantar Observatory represents a unique set of astronomical structures created on the orders of Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur - the capital of the newly formed Rajasthan. Literally, the name of the Observatory can be translated as "calculation tool." It was built five such observatories in different cities of India, but it is Jaipur Jantar Mantar is the largest of all, moreover, it has been preserved better than others.
Originally, this building was seen as a sacred place, as in astronomy at the time was engaged exclusively priestly caste.
The complex consists of 14 buildings, the huge sizes of devices that were used to determine the time, predictions of eclipses and weather, to determine the distance of celestial objects, etc. Then it was thought that such large dimensions give this instrument more accurate. So in Jaipur Jantar Mantar are the largest sundial in the world, the size of which is 27 meters in diameter. At the same time, they are in working order and indicate the exact time.
Today the Observatory attracts a lot of tourists from all over the world. In addition, it is still used by local astronomers to forecast the weather, although their predictions do not always come true. So this place is frequented by people who want to learn Vedic astrology as Jantar Mantar is one of the few "survivors" of the Vedic facilities.
In 1948, the Observatory has received the status of a national monument. And already in 2010, the Jantar Mantar was included in UNESCO World Heritage List.
