Church of the Transfiguration in Irkutsk - this is one of the attractions of the city and one of the oldest Orthodox churches in the region. It is located in the Right Bank district of Irkutsk Volkonsky alley.
The temple was built in 1795 with funds donated by Irkutsk merchants - Stefan and Ivan Ignatiev Dry, which were the main initiators of the construction of the church. It is assumed by the author of the project was the famous temple of the Irkutsk architect Anton Losev. As the church was being built it is still unknown, but it can be assumed that without the participation of craftsmen and blacksmiths Rabochedomskoy settlement is clearly not happened.
Right, Ilyinsky aisle of the church was consecrated in August 1798. Then it was founded the new parish of the Transfiguration.
The solemn consecration of the main Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord took place in August 1811 Temple fence, vestry and porch on the north side of the church, as well as an iron roof, which was put in place of the original wooden, equipped in 1849 with funds donated by an honorary citizen of Irkutsk, State advisor EA Kuznetsov. From 1845 to 1855 in the parish of the Transfiguration Church lived Decembrists SP Trubetskoy and S. Volkonsky. In this church married the son of the Decembrist Mikhail Kuchelbecker Volkonskiis and daughter - Elena.
According to archival data, in October 1937 the parish Church of the Transfiguration was the largest of the three existing Orthodox churches of Irkutsk. He totaled 1,505 parishioners. To all this, the church was the center of education, since here was opened parochial school, but on the contrary was Siropitatelny E. Medvednikova house.
In the Soviet years the building housed the church library and archives. Outside the church lost two side extensions. Worship in the Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration resumed only in 2000.
