The magnificent natural landscapes of the picturesque Greek island of Hydra, clear waters of the Aegean Sea, a fascinating history and a lot of interesting sights, and a well-developed tourist infrastructure each year attract many tourists from all over the world. Famous for the island of Hydra and many beautiful churches (300 churches and monasteries 6), including special attention certainly deserves Prophet Elias Monastery - one of the most revered Orthodox shrines of the island of Hydra.

The monastery is situated on the slopes of the scenic Mount Eros (588 m) at an altitude of just over 500 meters above sea level and offers magnificent panoramic views of the Saronic Gulf. However, it is worth spending a little more time and climb to the top of Eros, offering even more amazing scenery. The road to the monastery of the city of Hydra (the administrative center of the island) takes around 45 minutes. You can take a walk (after taking care of comfortable shoes and a supply of water) or use the traditional local transport - donkeys.

In the 70s of the 18th century on the site of the monastery was a small church, which was later abandoned. Prophet Elias Monastery, as we see it today was built in the early 19th century by monks from Mount Athos. In the monastery of Prophet Elias has its own excellent library, founded in 1870, the current abbot Hierotheos Kostopoulos. Today the monastery is home to a few monks.

In Greek history, the monastery became a place where some time spent in custody hero Theodoros Kolokotronis Greek Revolution.
Certainly worth a visit and is located within walking distance of the convent of St. Eupraxia.
