History museum extends deep into the prison gates for seven centuries, that's why it is included in the list of the 100 most important historical monuments of the Netherlands.
In 1280 the gates to the area were the main Bёytenhof entrance to the castle, which is now known as the Binnenhof. 1428 gates were used as a place of imprisonment for debtors or criminals awaiting trial.
One hundred years later, it was the gate and attach new cameras courtroom. Up until the XVII century prison was not considered as such a punishment - punishment were fines, expulsion, corporal punishment or the death penalty.
It includes well-known historical figures: Cornelis de Witt, accused of conspiring against William of Orange, and the writer, scholar and philosopher Dirk Volkertsen Koorngert. The prison has existed for 400 years, but by 1828 the prisoners are no longer there. Twice there have been proposals to demolish this building - in 1853 and 1873, fortunately, did not make it to the business, and from 1882 became a museum prison gates. Some parts of the museum can only be visited with a guide.
In the next building is Gallery William V - Art Gallery, founded in 1774 by William V, Prince of Orange. Since 2010, visitors can get to the gallery on a spiral staircase that connects the two buildings. The collection, which is presented there now - a modern reconstruction of 1774, which was also located in the upper floor of the house. Pictures closely hung on the walls, as was customary in the XVIII century. Paintings were donated to the museum Mauritshuis in 1822, which is the formal owner of the paintings.
