The exposition of the Municipal Museum of Gothenburg tells about the history and culture of the city and its inhabitants from the earliest times to the present day. The museum is housed in a beautiful 18th-century building, the former office of the Swedish East India Company, which occupies an entire city block in central Gothenburg.

The museum was founded in 1861, but its final form it has acquired only after July 1, 1993, when there was a unification of the five museums in Gothenburg - archaeological, historical, industrial, as well as museums and the theater school history. Thus, after the merger was the collection of the Municipal Museum, there are about one million and two million pieces of photographs. The union also entailed the renovation and restoration of the building. The museum was opened in its updated form July 1, 1996.

First of all the museum has a historical focus, telling about the history of Gothenburg and West Sweden for more than 12 thousand years. In addition, the City Museum has the largest library and archive, which incorporates the most complete history of the region and the city, in particular. One of the most notable exhibits is the ship of the Viking Age, today it is the only surviving Viking ship with runic inscriptions.

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum continually holds temporary exhibitions on various subjects. It also hosts a wide range of activities that are of interest among visitors of all ages, such as seminars, guided tours and walks around the city. The museum has a gift shop, cafe and a new playroom for children.
