Gothenburg Cathedral is the main church of the diocese of the city. Originally on this place in the center of Gothenburg was a temporary wooden church, which is the first church of the city. She stood for about 12 years until it was demolished in 1633 to make way for the construction of a new cathedral. To raise funds for the construction of the King even established a special tax in 1627. A wooden church was demolished, but its tower was used as a watchdog has more than nine years.
April 15, 1721 in the city there was a fire, which resulted in burned more than 200 buildings, including a new cathedral. Since the walls of the church still remain, the building was restored in 1722, but the tower, the altar and the crypt was completed much later.
Second Council met the same fate as the first - it burned down December 20, 1802, along with 179 houses in the district. This time, a fire badly damaged the building so that the question could not talk about his recovery. In 1804, construction began on the new cathedral, a building which has survived to the present day.
The new cathedral was built by the architect Charles William Karlberg (his pupil completed the construction after his death in 1814), and was consecrated bishop on the feast of the Holy Trinity, May 21, 1815. However, the church was not completed because the tower had not been built at that time. Second opening of the church was held September 9, 1827.
The current cathedral was built in classical style and has a slightly larger than both its predecessor. The interior of the church includes elements of different styles, mainly classical and Empire.
