One of the many military fortifications in India under the name of Fort Tirakol, or whatever it is called Terekhol, located in the southern state of Goa, in the northern part of the river at the source Terekhol.

The fort was built in the XVII century by Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle - Raja Savantvadi. The place of construction was chosen the northern (right) side of the river, a clear view of the coast and the coastal waters of the Arabian Sea. And the fort consisted of barracks and the chapel, and was armed with twelve guns. In 1746 against Raja Maharaja were Portuguese led by the 44th Viceroy Pedro Miguel de Almeida. And November 23, 1746 in one of the sea battles of Europeans won the final victory over the Indian ruler. Since Fort Tirakol become one of the most important marine "base" of the Portuguese, who completely rebuilt it in 1764.

This place was controlled by Europeans until 1961 - long after a long struggle, finally was given the power of the Indian state. But up to this point for the possession of this strategically important point has been heavy fighting. For example, in 1825, the rebels, led by the first-born in Goa Viceroy - Dr. Bernard Peres da Silva, who spoke against the Portuguese rule, have all been cut, and their heads on their bayonets put on display. Then the fort itself was badly damaged - were destroyed barracks for soldiers and a chapel, which, fortunately, were later recovered. In addition, when the chapel was turned into a full-fledged church, which everyone knows as the Church of St. Anthony.

At the moment, the fort converted into a hotel, which is happy to accept all comers.
