Genoa's Aquarium - the largest aquarium in Italy and the second largest in Europe. Located in the old harbor of Genoa at Cape Ponte Spinola, it covers an area of 3,100 sq.m. and is a member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquarium. Every year it is visited by more than 1, 2 million people!

Construction of the aquarium was timed for the International Exhibition "Expo '92 Genova", which in turn was organized in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America's most famous native of the town of Christopher Columbus. At that time it was the second largest aquarium in the world.

Aquarium Building was designed by architect Renzo Piano. Some say it looks like a ship ready to set sail. The interior was done by Peter Shermayefom, which is also responsible for the preparation of initial exposure. In 1998, to increase the exhibition area to the aquarium was built on a 100-meter ship, connected to the main building by a covered walkway.

The original concept of the aquarium was to show the audience the underwater world of the Ligurian Sea, the North Atlantic and the reefs of the Caribbean from two perspectives: that what it was five centuries ago, during the voyage of Columbus, and that in which it has become in our time.

Today, the aquarium consists of 70 reservoirs with a total capacity of 6 million liters, which inhabits an incredible variety of fish, reptiles and invertebrates. The most popular inhabitants of the aquarium are definitely dolphins, sharks, seals and turtles. It conducts research, a project «AquaRing EU project» and interactive learning online courses.
