On the waterfront Shaumankay is a complex of museums
Museum of Applied Arts was opened in 1983 in a converted building that united the house and Biedermeier house Metzler. There is a magnificent collection of objects of applied art from Europe and Asia. Nearby is the Museum of Ethnography.
The museum is located in an avant-garde architecture of the building, designed by OM Ungers. Besides the permanent exhibition there are organized temporary exhibitions devoted to the architecture of the twentieth century.
Nearby is German Film Museum, which houses many documents and objects relating to the history of the film industry. The museum has its own cinema, which demonstrates the old and rare movies.
Museum of Sculpture in the House of Liebig. Here you can see works from ancient times to the Mannerist, Baroque and Rococo. Including fine examples of ancient Egyptian art, the art of the Renaissance and Neoclassicism.
Städel Art Institute is named after its founder - the banker Johann Friedrich Städel, who in 1815 bequeathed his art collection to the city. The museum grew by various gifts and acquisitions. On the ground floor of the building housed temporary exhibits of paintings and drawings. The second floor is given to works of art XIX-XX centuries. Located on the third of the old masters - European artists of the XIV-XVIII century, including paintings by Botticelli, Bosch, Jan van Eyck, Jan Vermeer, Rembrandt, Watteau, and many other famous artists.
