Old Fortress of Corfu Town (Kerkyra) is one of the most impressive fortifications in Europe. This is the first that will see the traveler, approaching the ferry to Corfu. The old fortress is situated in the eastern part of the city on an artificial rocky island.

The history of the old fortress is from the time of Byzantine rule. The construction, however, which we see today, it was a big part built by the Venetians in the 15th century on the site of an old Byzantine fortress. In order to make the fort more secure Venetians created an artificial moat. To get to the castle, you can on a wooden suspension bridge. In 1819 the British replaced the bridge to a more robust and comfortable design. Also, the British built other buildings and additional fortifications.

Walled City has always played an important role in defending the city. During the war with the Turks the fortress successfully withstood Ottoman invaders and have not been able to conquer Corfu. Severely damaged the fortress during the Second World War, after which were restored.

To get to the Old Fortress is possible through the famous Esplanade (Spianada), which is considered the second largest square in Europe .  Simply cross the small bridge and you will find yourself at the entrance, made in the form of an arch, over which is the symbol of Venice - lion carved in marble .  Next to the entrance on the right side there is a small chapel of Madonna Carmini .  Near the entrance is a room museum, which houses the Historical Archives of Corfu and the collection of Byzantine relics (icons, sculpture, painting) .  Nearby is located in a former barracks, built by the British in the 18th century .  Today it houses the Public Library, which holds rare manuscripts and publications .  The building of the former hospital located Musical School .  A notable structure is the Church of St. George - is the only church in Greece, made in the Doric style .  At the fortress there is also a cafe and gift shop .
