Volissos - one of the oldest settlements of the island of Chios. It is located in the northwestern part of the island about 40 km from the capital city of the same name. A small cozy town in the form of an amphitheater down the slopes of the picturesque hill, the top of which offers stunning panoramic views of the island and the vast expanses of the Aegean.
The settlement existed here since time immemorial. According to one version of the ancient Valissose was born, he lived and created his immortal masterpieces of the famous ancient Greek poet Homer. Highest same Valissos reached heyday in the Middle Ages, becoming an important economic and cultural center of the island. During this period on a hilltop General Velizariosom Byzantine fortress it was built - a massive structure in the shape of a trapezoid with six round towers, well preserved to this day. At the fortress were several separate buildings, special tanks for water harvesting and the church. There was also a tunnel leading from the castle to the sea.
Valissos managed to preserve the atmosphere of the charming medieval town. Narrow cobbled streets, restored old stone houses and new houses, made in a single architectural style, Byzantine churches, windmills and watermills, beautiful surroundings and hospitality of the locals are attracting more and more tourists. In Valissose you will find a good selection of hotels and apartments, excellent restaurants and taverns, as well as all the necessary services.
Not far from Valissosa (about 8 km) in the picturesque bay and is one of the main shrines of Chios - the Monastery of St. Marcellus (a native of these parts, and the patroness of the island). About 20 minutes walk from the temple, in the place where it is believed, adopted its martyred saint Marcellus, you will see a small rock crevices from which flows the warm clear water with healing properties. On July 22, the day of Saint Marcellus huge number of people (both locals and guests of the island) gather here to honor her memory.
Just 2 km from the Valissosa is its ancient port - Limni, near which you will find plenty of great beaches as sand and gravel (Lefkatya, Managros, maghemite, Gonia, etc.). From Limni can also take a fascinating trip to the nearby island of Psara.
